Oscar de la Renta, the youngest of seven children and the only boy in his family, was born in 1932 to a Dominican mother and Puerto Rican father. He founded his eponymous fashion design house in 1965 after studying the art of painting, sketching clothes for newspapers and fashion houses, and then spending several years working in the haute couture scene. De la Renta also paved the way for other Dominican designers, becoming the first Dominican to design for a French couture house. After various triumphs, like his international recognition as one of Jacqueline Kennedy's dressers and his collection of awards for both design and philanthropy, Oscar de la Renta went on to become one of the most recognized fashion designers of the 20th and 21st century.
